Good overall experience with a 1-week car rental....with some caveats. Bottom line - we'll use Sixt again before any other rental service in Puerto Vallarta (or worldwide). The good: car was in great condition and ready at pickup time. We made the reservation the evening before and the online transaction was seamless. No line at the pickup counter and they upgraded us for free (!) Not so good: through no fault of Sixt, the transit authority in the state of Jalisco, Mexico *requires* at least 5 mil. MXN of third party collision coverage - this corresponds with the mid-tier insurance option on the Sixt website. Frustratingly, the website still allowed us to book without add'l insurance. Just to be sure on the final price, after the online booking we called and asked (in fluent Spanish) if the price listed on our reservation with basic insurance was exactly what we'd pay at pickup. The receptionist confirmed, and we re-asked the question in a different way to be extra sure. She said "the price on your reservation is what you'll pay at pickup". Then, at pickup, they explained the Jalisco insurance situation, and we had to pay for the upgraded insurance. Seeing we were annoyed by this, they upgraded us to a midsize for free (!), which was nice of them. Clearly they deal with this situation frequently and even had a QR code available to scan and read about the car rental laws in Jalisco. Secondly, the Sixt website clearly states that pets are allowed in all their rental vehicles, with no comments on extra cleaning fees. Although our small dog has no smell, she does leave fur, and we wanted to be respectful customers so we took the car in for a professional cleaning/detailing prior to the return. To our chagrin, the reviewer found "4 small hairs under the cushion", so they sent the manager out to inspect. She told us cars are only for humans. After we pointed out the pro-pet policy on the Sixt website, they said any pets should always be in a carrier, that the Puerto Vallarta location doesn't accept pets at all, and that we were told this upon pickup (not true). After arguing a bit they didn't charge us an extra cleaning fee, but it added an extra 20 minutes to our return. All that said, the staff were polite and professional even during this tension, and we weren't charged any unexpected fees, so we'd rent with Sixt again (the other mainstream car rental services in Puerto Vallarta are terrible by any metric - as reflected in their online reviews). Sixt really is the best in the industry.

I just rented a car from SIXT and I can give a honest review hopefully can help other travelers like us who had the anxiety to be scammed by some bad car rental places as we always heard from other reviews. This place’s pricing is legit. But keep in mind that their so-called included Third Party liability is NOT sufficient for the state law and they would not rent to you unless you purchase their additional third party liability (up to 5,000,000peso coverage as they said required by the state). So just keep in mind that whatever quote you got from Expedia or even their own web site will probably not the actual price you’ll end up paying. In our case, we initially quoted like USD$25/day for a compact car but ended up with the required liability, the actual price will be like USD$55/day. This is where most confusion and disappointment come from and make travelers think we’re scammed. So just keep in mind that you’re likely going to pay double the price of what quoted online. One thing that SIXT is fair was that they didn’t force us to buy any other insurances : like LDW (ie. CDW in US/Canada, which covers the damage of the vehicle itself) is optional and can be covered by your own credit card’s insurance benefit. They would put like USD$1500 hold on your card so make sure your card has the credit limit for such a hold. Other than this liability insurance concern, the rest of the rental process was smooth and pleasant. The staff there was friendly and speak perfect English. They’re nice and not trying to upsell us anything. The fellow who inspect the car with us was thorough, friendly and honest. The car was a bit high in mileage (about 40000miles) but it ran fine and nothing broken. We took some others’ advice to record the scratches on the underside as the road in PV and Jalisco in general are rough and could be easy to get scratches. Finally one more tip: use their Mexican website SIXT.com.mx to book: the pricing there are slightly lower than the English website. I hope they’d fix this so to prevent the feeling of trying to rip off non-Spanish speakers for a few more bucks a day. Returning the car was easy and straight forward. No scam no surprise no problem. I’ll rent from them again. Thanks for the great service. I gave 4 stars instead of 5 because of the liability insurance confusion as their own web site clearly stated that third party liability is included but it’s actually not sufficient for the law and they wouldn’t rent to you without you buying more third party liability coverage. Unlike Cactus rent-a-car in Los Cabos, their price was one actual price exactly as quoted on their web site.
