This city in Massachusetts is full of history. You can make a day of it with Faneuil Hall, the Paul Revere House and the Freedom Trail, as well as Boston Harbor. During baseball season you can get tickets to a Red Sox game at iconic Fenway Park. When the weather is nice, take a stroll along the Charles River toward Cambridge where you can walk through Harvard Square or visit the MIT campus and museum. If you have time, drive to one of the nearby coastal towns like Nahant to sit on the beach and eat some clams.
Salem: Many people travel here because of the town’s rich history, and its notoriety as the site of the Salem Witch Trials in the 1600s. Only a 40-minute drive north of Boston, there is plenty to do here, even if it’s just looking at the historic buildings.
Cape Cod: If you need a break from the city, combined with time on the beach, you can drive for less than 1.5 hours south to Cape Cod. Enjoy the quaint beach towns or take the ferry to Martha’s Vineyard if you have the time.
Plymouth: History buffs will love visiting this town, which is the site of the first permanent European settlement in the US. Only 45 minutes south of Boston, you can easily drive here and visit replica villages and museums showing how Native Americans and Pilgrims lived.
Massachusetts Turnpike: This toll road runs for about 138 miles on I-90, connecting Boston with Worcester and Springfield. The variable rate for tolls depends on the time of day and whether you are traveling east or west. You can pay electronically with EZ-Pass, and there are discounts available if you have the Massachusetts EZ-Pass.
Pleasant weather makes summer the ideal time to visit Boston. There is water all around – the Charles River and Massachusetts Bay - so heading out on a boat tour or renting a kayak is a great way to see the city. There are even whale watching tours! There are some islands in the harbor worth visiting, like Spectacle Island or Castle Island. If you are visiting on July 3 or 4, look for the Boston Pops Fireworks Spectacular. If you plan to only use your rental in Boston, a sedan is a great option!
