Brindisi is one of Italy's most well-known historical towns and was recognized as being the bridge to the East, being a major port for Romans and Venetian merchants. The port in Apulia is still very much in use, for travel connections from the airports and the sea. Svevo Castle is a historic site in Brindisi that is definitely worth a visit. This castle was first built in 1132 and demolished in 1156. Rebuilt in 1233, by Frederick II, the castle is truly an impressive, with a moat surrounding the southern, eastern and western sides. The entire port is visible from Svevo Castle and the Swabian Tower has been transformed into a space for exhibitions. Take a drive to the Temio di San Giovanni al Sepolcro, which is another interesting place to visit. This historical church actually mirrors, in design, the Church of the Holy Sepulcher, in Jerusalem, although Brindisi's version is of miniature dimensions. Lido Azzurro beach is stunning; with fine grains of sand and crystal clear waters. Cabins are available to rent here, making it a wonderful place to come to for a weekend break.
