What to Do in Beirut in Summer
The good news about summer in Beirut is there is no rain, but the bad news is it’s very hot. Walk along the Corniche or rent a bike to get some ocean breeze, and then visit an outdoor souk. There are also several beach resorts for you to relax. Go to Mar Mikhael or Gemmyzeh for a hipper and more youthful scene. Or walk around the city to see the American University of Beirut campus and the destroyed Holiday Inn to see glimpses of the city from before and after its war-torn past. If planning a summer visit, be aware that Ramadan and the Islamic New Year may mean daytime business closures.
What to Do in Beirut in Winter
The winter is cool and rainy, so it’s best to plan some indoor activities. Take a day trip to Baalbek, where you can see Roman ruins. Then go to the National Museum to see its collection of unearthed treasures. The so-called “Blue Mosque” allows visitors and is also a great piece of architecture. If the weather allows, see the Roman baths that are miraculously still mostly intact. If you plan to drive into the mountainous areas of Lebanon in winter, be sure to rent an SUV!
