The archaeological site Ayaz-Kala is actually 3 ancient fortresses that rise out of Kyzyl Kum desert plains. You can visit them with tours from Khiva. Though tragically the Aral Sea has shrunk in volume by 90 percent since the 1960s due to disastrous irrigation policies, what remains of the Aral Sea is still popular with tourists who visit to bathe in the waters and visit rusting boats in the cemetery of ships. The Sarmish-say petroglyphs are located in the Karatou mountain range and date to the Bronze Age.
