We’re driving from Wyoming to North Carolina to explore some of the stories of the U.S.’s most renowned highway legends and ghosts.
The Phantom of the Biloxi Lighthouse
Spanning across the Gulf Coast of Mississippi, Highway 90 is best known for its turbulent occupation during the Civil War, historic landmarks and expansive views of the coast. One of the most enchanting viewpoints is that of the Biloxi Lighthouse and the ghost that wanders its shores. Built in 1848, the lighthouse was a haven for sailors and merchants to safely find their way to land; now it is a kingpin of intrigue.
According to local legend, the ghost of a lighthouse keeper, once drowned in the height of a treacherous storm, floats along the shoreline from Biloxi Back Bay to Deer Island. Emulated in the form of a phantom blue light, the ‘Firewater Ghost’, is said to be duty-bound to glow as a guiding light for sailors beyond the shoreline. Known as a spirit of perseverance rather than peril, there are no known tales of ferocity shown by the Firewater ghost.
Tales of the ghost have often hailed from those bound to the water, first with a fisherman witnessing the orb proclaiming it as a “mysterious lantern” years before electricity was known to the world. Later, in 1891, two brothers, Eugene and Lewis Tiblier, rowed to Biloxi back bay in the early hours of the morning, witnessing the phantom float towards Ocean Springs. In modern day, the lighthouse is a well-known location for ghost hunting, with some witnesses claiming to have experienced sudden chills in its presence and an overwhelming sense of being watched by the wraith itself. Some have even claimed to have photographed the glowing orb themselves. While others insist that the keeper’s funeral vigil can be heard echoing across the waves flowing eerily onto the cold shore.
The Ghost of Dead Man’s Curve
Clinton Road in West Milford, New Jersey, is notorious for being one of the most haunted roads in America. Stretching over 10 miles, this road is a hotspot for paranormal activity. Ghostly sightings, phantom vehicles, and mysterious lights are common occurrences here. One of the most famous legends involves a phantom pickup truck that appears to follow drivers before vanishing.
A lesser known, but supremely chilling tale is that of “The Ghost Boy” who haunts an abandoned bridge at a turn in the road appropriately named ‘Dead Man’s Curve’. Legend proclaims that the boy, once walking upon the road, stopped to pick up a quarter glimmering at his feet. In moments the boy tragically lost his life. Many claim that his spirit still resides under the bridge. It is said that tossing coins into the river below beckons the ghost from the depths to laugh or reach out to those who dare to do so. Others have claimed that the ghost has started to revolt against this, with reports of coins being tossed back at the vehicles of those who have attempted to coax the spirit.
Highway to Heaven
Another highway shrouded in folklore and mystery is Highway 1-80 in Wyoming, this long stretch of land. Known colloquially as the Highway to Heaven, due to its elevation of 7,470 feet on a long stretch between several peaks named the “The Three sisters”, it is said to create an ethereal illusion of driving upwards, taking you on the pathway to the heavens. The picturesque but treacherous road lives up to its celestial name with numerous tales of ghostly encounters and paranormal activity. Drivers have reported sudden temperature drops, phantom sightings, and even unexplained vehicle malfunctions on the Highway to Heaven. Whether you’re a believer or a skeptic, a drive along this haunted highway promises a unique experience. Passing through historic areas famously known for similar sights such as Casper, Cheyenne and Fort Bridger, it is a must for those interested in the supernatural.
