Parking in Indianapolis is not a problem with more than 73,000 places available in the downtown area alone. Generally, there is no free parking except in residential areas where you can take public transportation into downtown. Known as the crossroads of America, there are a huge number of Interstates leading into Indianapolis, meaning many junctions and a lot of traffic. If you’re heading downtown from the airport try to travel outside of rush hour to avoid delays.
Where to Find On-Street Parking
On-street parking is not a problem but there is generally a 3-hour maximum time limit and the cost is around $1.50 per hour. You will find metered street parking at almost every other street in downtown Indianapolis. Make sure there are no signs warning of an event happening on the street where you are parking as this could lead to your vehicle being towed. Traffic enforcement is vigorous and you can incur fines for parking more than 1 foot away from the curb.
Where to Find Parking Garages
There are many parking garages throughout the city and while they are somewhat expensive many are conveniently located and have attendants, bringing you some added protection against damage or theft. Prices range from $1 per hour to $6 an hour so check the signs before you park.
Where to Park for Free
You can park in the metered on-street parking spots for free after 9 p.m. and before 7 a.m. in the downtown area. Outside of this zone, you can park up for free after 8 p.m. On Sundays the on-street metered parking is free as well as on all major holidays. For free parking, your other option is to park in a residential area in the suburbs near to public transport.
Park & Ride Locations
The only park and ride option is at Indianapolis International Airport. They do charge daily rates for parking but you can leave your vehicle with 24/7 security and take the shuttle into Indianapolis. There is also the option to reserve your parking space in advance with companies such as Fast Park, whose rates are also fairly economical.
