The second day of the #SIXTmusic showcases as part of the Mondo.NYC music conference took us again to LaGuardia Airport to pick up Miu Haiti. Then we were off to do a video shoot.
SIXT is the official mobility partner of Mondo.NYC and, together with our partner gigmit, we had a contest that gave young artists the opportunity to perform at the event.
Miu was born and raised in Haiti. The daughter of a hat maker and a saxophonist, she wants to share her music with the world. The pop singer-songwriter sings in four languages (Creole, French, Spanish and English). She was awarded the “Best Pop Song” Award at the Akademia Music Awards in Los Angeles in April 2018 for her song “They Say”. She was nominated for “Best Female Solo Artist of the Year” at the prestigious Haitian Music Award in 2018. And like many other musicians, her last live concert was in 2019. So #SIXTmusic was also a restart after such a long absence from the stage.
From LaGuardia Airport we went to Bar Freda in Ridgewood for the night’s #SIXTmusic concert, this time a bit sportier in a BMW X4 rental car. The bar is a combination of neighborhood pub and music venue, with DJs playing upstairs on the weekend and concerts in the basement. With a capacity of 74 attendees, the venue has a cozy and intimate atmosphere. The sound is amazingly good for such a small venue.
Fun fact: It was raining cats and dogs in New York that night. In a surreal moment, at one point during the evening’s concert the sound guy was standing in the middle of the room with a mop because the rainwater was running from the street into the club basement.
Besides Miu, Thomas Piper and Mike Borgia were the evening’s openers. Piper creates original sounds with a KORG Wavestate. He plays a variety of roles: Singer, songwriter, producer, live act. He plays guitar and drums simultaneously with the KORG, combines them into hip hop sounds, and also manages to be a funny entertainer who quickly animates the crowd.
