IL Toll Roads FAQs
You can use an I-PASS or E-ZPass transponder for toll roads in Illinois. There’s also the online Pay by Plate service to pay after driving on a toll road, or cash or card payment at toll booths.
You can use the online Pay by Plate service to pay tolls up to 10 days after driving on a toll road in Illinois. This can only be used on the Illinois Tollway and not the Chicago Skyway.
If you don’t pay within 14 days of driving on a toll road in Illinois, you will receive an invoice. You will then be charged for the unpaid tolls.
You can use the E-ZPass or I-PASS transponders, cash and major credit cards to pay tolls on the Chicago Skyway bridge and other toll roads in and around the city.
The cost varies based on the toll road, type of vehicle and time of day. Check the Illinois Tollway website for more information about toll prices.
You can use the E-ZPass to pay for toll roads in Illinois, just like with the I-PASS. This includes the Chicago Skyway and Illinois State Toll Highway Authority roads.

Jane Addams Memorial Tollway
How and when to use the Jane Addams Memorial Tollway
Use the Jane Addams Memorial Tollway to get you from Rockford to O’Hare International Airport. It will also take you to North to Wisconsin coming from Rockford or O’Hare International Airport.
The Jane Addams Memorial Tollway is a direct link between the greater Rockford Area and the Chicago Metro Area and crosses both the I-90 and I-290. Tolls are paid at both manned and unmanned toll plazas. At unattended ramp plazas drivers can only pay with I-PASS, E-ZPass or exact coins only. There are a few toll plazas which except only electronic tolling. At Illinois Route 47 (EB exit/WB entrance) customers without I-PASS/EZ-Pass will incur a $0.90 unpaid toll; Illinois Route 47 (EB entrance/WB exit) customers without I-PASS/EZ-Pass will incur a $0.60 unpaid toll. Customers without I-PASS/EZ-Pass are responsible for paying the unpaid toll online or by mail within 7 days. History
Originally opened in 1958 as the Northwest Tollway, it was renamed in 2007 for Nobel Peace Prize winner Jane Addams founder of the Settlement House movement in the US.
Illinois Tri-State Tollway
How and when to use the Illinois Tri-State Tollway
The Tri-State Tollway allows drivers to bypass the city of Chicago when heading to destinations in Wisconsin, Illinois or Indiana. The Tri-State Tollway offers access to all Chicago freeways except the I-355.
Tolls are paid at toll plazas located along the route. Manned toll plazas where drivers can pay cash are found at Waukegan, Edens Spur, Touhy Avenue, Irving Park Road (Illinois Road 19), Cermak Road (22nd Street), 82nd Street, 83rd Street, and 163rd Street. Unattended toll plazas can only be paid I-PASS, E-ZPass or exact coins. At all-electronic tolling ramps cash is not accepted. Balmoral Road customers without I-PASS/EZ-Pass will incur a $1.60 unpaid toll; I-57/147th St (Illinois 83) customers without I-PASS/EZ-Pass will incur a $1.50 unpaid toll. Customers without I-PASS/EZ-Pass are responsible for paying the unpaid toll online or by mail within 7 days.

History
Despite its name, the Tri-State Tollway does not enter either Indiana or Wisconsin. It was built in the mid to late 1950s as a bypass of Chicago.
Chicago Skyway
How and when to use the Chicago Skyway
Cash is only accepted in the CASH ONLY lanes. These are marked on the plaza canopy signs and are the lanes located on left hand side. Only United States currency up to $100 bills is accepted. Entrances are prior to the toll plazas and in the direction you are traveling
1) Eastbound: Dan Ryan Expressway (I-90/I-94), State Street, St.Lawrence Ave., 73rd Street, Stony Island, Jeffery Ave. (87th Street is no longer available
2 ) Westbound: Indiana Toll Road (I-90), 105th, 92nd Street Exit ramps are located after the toll plaza in the direction your are traveling.
3) Eastbound: 92nd S treet, Indianapolis Blvd. then the Indiana Toll Road.
4) Westbound: 87th Street, Stony Island, 73rd Street, St. Lawrence Ave. State Street and the Dan Ryan Expressway (I-90/I-94).

History
The Chicago Skyway Bridge was built in 1958 to connect the Dan Ryan Expressway to the Indiana Toll Road. In 2005 it became the US’s first privatized toll road. The Chicago Skyway’s main feature is its half mile long steel truss bridge built over the Calmut River. The bridge is the highest and longest in Chicago.

The Ronald Reagan Memorial Tollway runs east- west across North-Central and Northeastern Illinois and the I-88 is part of the Chicago-Kansas City Expressway.
Tolls are paid at toll plazas along the route. Manned toll stations are found at York Road, Meyers Road, Aurora, DeKalb, and Dixon. At unattended ramp plazas tolls can only be paid with I-PASS, E-ZPass or exact coins. At all-electronic tolling ramps cash is not accepted and drivers without I-PASS/EZ-Pass will incur a $1.10 unpaid toll and are responsible for paying the unpaid toll online or by mail within 7 days.
Toll rates are based on time of day. Daytime Hours: 6:00 a.m.-10:00 p.m. Overnight Hours: 10:00 p.m.-6:00 a.m.Note that there is no direct off-ramp access to US Route 52, Illinois Route 23, Illinois Route 25, and northbound Illinois Route 83. The tollway merges with Illinois Route 56 for a short distance.

History
Opened in 1958, the tollway was initially designated as U.S. Route 30 Toll and later Illinois Route 190. After the 2004 death of Illinois native and former President Ronal Reagan the Illinois State Toll Highway Authority renamed the toll roadway Ronald Reagan Memorial Tollway as it passes near his birthplace of Tampico and the south outskirts of his childhood town of Dixon. The tollway portion was previously known as the East-West Tollway and this name still appears on some signs near Chicago.
Veterans Memorial Tollway
How and when to use the Veterans Memorial Tollway
There are only three manned toll stations along the Veterans Memorial Tollway located at Army Trail Road, Boughton Road and Spring Creek. Tolls can be electronically paid with I-Pass or E-ZPass or with exact coins only at unattended toll plazas. Daytime hours are from 6 am to 10 pm and Overnight hours are from 10pm until 6 am.

History
Opened in 1989 as the North-South Tollway the I-355 was meant to ease congestion on Illinois Route 53. In 2007 a southern extension was added and upon opening its name was changed to Veterans Memorial Tollway.
