SIXT SHARE FAQs - Vehicles & Rental Information

Renting

When does the rent start?

The rental starts once you click on "unlock" in the SIXT App. Starting from that moment, we will charge you with the minute price valid at that certain time, if applicable additional costs for extended reservations will be added. Please check the vehicle before you start the rental and report all new damages via the SIXT App. Please make sure to call the police for each new damage and read our T&C carefully. 

How long can I rent the car?

SIXT share vehicles can be rented for up to and including 27 days.

How long can I reserve the vehicle?

The vehicle can be reserved via the app for 15 minutes free of charge. An extended reservation costs approx. 30% of the current price per minute (max. € 0,12 / min) and can be made for a maximum of 12 hours. If the rental does not start before the end of the reservation period, the vehicle will be released again for all users.Tip for early birds: Reserving a car is free of charge Sunday through Thursday, between 10pm and 6am the following morning.

Where can I find SIXT share vehicles?

SIXT share is currently available in Germany and the Netherlands. In Germany, the vehicles are distributed across the business areas of Berlin, Hamburg and Munich and are displayed in the app. Furthermore, SIXT share vehicles can be rented at selected German SIXT stations in Bochum, Dresden, Duisburg, Leipzig and Nuremberg. In the Netherlands, SIXT share cars are available within the business areas of Amsterdam, Rotterdam and The Hague. More cities will follow soon.

I can't find the vehicle. What should I do?

Of course, you deserve a smooth process when using SIXT share. There may be several reasons if you can't find a vehicle. Please reach out to the customer service, they will be happy to help.   

What to do if there is no car available nearby?

When you use the Car Radar feature we will let you know as soon as a car is available and reserve it for you.

  • To set up your car radar, first, select the time and place you need a car.
  • At the specified time, we will check for suitable cars within a 500 m radius of the address you provided. We will also apply your filter settings when searching for a car.
  • As soon as we find a suitable car, we will automatically reserve it for you and send you a push notification.
  • Once the car is reserved, you can choose and add packages and protection options. 

In the event that several people set up a car radar for the same time and location, we will reserve the car for whoever set it up first.

Can I plan my journey in advance?

When you use the Car Radar feature we will let you know as soon as a car is available and reserve it for you. You can set it up 10 days in advance.

How do I unlock and lock the car?

To start the rental, open the vehicle via the app by clicking on "Open" in the "Share" tab. Use the vehicle key to open and close the car during the journey, e.g. if you would like to do a short stopover. The key is in the glove compartment. At the end of the rental, put the key back in the glove compartment and lock the car using the app.

Can I filter by specific vehicle models?

Yes, you can easily customize your preferences for your favorite vehicles within the app. Simply use the filter function located on the right side of the map view. 

The car won't open. Why is that?

Of course, you deserve a smooth process when using SIXT share. There may be several reasons if you can't unlock a vehicle. Please reach out to the customer service, they will be happy to help. 

Why won't the vehicle lock?

Of course, you deserve a smooth process when using SIXT share. If a vehicle cannot be locked, this may have a specific cause. Please reach out to the customer service, they will be happy to help.   

I was asked to enter my PIN code again. Why is that?

If the engine of your SIXT share car is switched off for 10 minutes or longer during your journey, the SIXT app will ask you to enter your PIN code again. This is for security reasons. If you are making a stop and want to continue your journey, please enter your PIN to confirm. This will release the vehicle immobilizer, that is activated during the course of the security check.

If you have ended your rental, or if you believe, the rental should already have ended, please do not enter the PIN code, instead reach out to our customer service by phone.

The vehicle is dirty from the inside or the outside. How can I report this?

Even though all our vehicles are maintained and cleaned on a regular basis, it can still happen that your reserved car is dirty. Please take a few minutes to report the condition of the car via the SIXT app and help us to provide you with the best experience when using SIXT share.

During an ongoing reservation or rental, you will find the option "Damage & Cleanliness" within the SIXT app. Click on it and tell us what needs to be done by choosing, whether the car is dirty from the inside or the outside or both. You will find multiple options to report the condition of the car and you'll even be able to upload pictures. Once you are done, just click on "Submit" and our team will take care as soon as possible. Of course, reporting a cleanliness issue will still allow you to use the car to reach your destination. 

Equipment

Do you have child seats or booster seats in the cars?

No, our vehicles are not equipped with child booster seats. Please bring your own, if needed. 

Can I find ice scrapers in the cars?

Yes, there are ice scrapers in the vehicle.

What types of transmission do you have in the SIXT share fleet?

In our fleet in Germany, we offer both,  vehicles with manual transmission and automatic transmission. To find out the type of transmission, simply click on a vehicle on the map, this will open the vehicle details. You will find the information about the transmission type right below the picture of the car. In the Netherlands, our fleet is 100% electric. 

Lost property

I have found a lost item in the car. What should I do?

Please place the found item in the glove compartment or in the trunk and reach out to the customer service to inform them. 

I have left something in the car. What should I do?

We are happy to help you finding your lost item. Please reach out to our customer service and provide a detailed description of your item, this will make it easier for us to support you. 

Vehicle usage

What do I need to consider when driving an electric vehicle?

Our aim is to provide flexible and sustainable mobility solutions. This is why a part of our fleet consists of electric cars. To turn on the car, simply depress the brake and push the Start/Stop button or use the car key (located in the glove department). When driving, please be aware, that electric cars are very silent and other traffic participants might not hear you. This makes defensive driving even more important. To avoid high battery consuption, we suggest to use high energy-consuming equipement (e.g. heating, air conditioning, radio) cautiously. 

How do I start a car with automatic transmission?

To start the car, depress the brake and push the Start/Stop button or turn vehicle key. 

How do I start a car with manual transmission?

To start the car, depress the brake with one foot and the clutch with the other, then push the Start/Stop button or turn vehicle key. 

Where is the vehicle key?

The vehicle key is stored in the glove compartment and must be put back there at the end of your rental. In case, the key is not in the glove department, please inform the customer service. 

Return

What do I have to consider when travelling to another business area?

With SIXT share, you can travel from one business area to another within your pick-up country. When ending the rental in another business area, please make sure to properly park the vehicle for the next 48 hours at permitted points in public roads, in accordance with the Highway Code. Please note additional fees will be applied if you drop off a car in another business area. Please an overview of the fees in our tariff overview.

How do I return a car to a SIXT station?

With SIXT share, you have the opportunity to submit your car sharing vehicle throughout Germany at a SIXT station. When you stop renting at a SIXT station, we recommend that you inform yourself in advance of the address of the desired station. Follow the car return signs when returning. In the Car Return section of the SIXT store, remove the vehicle key from the glove box, end the rental as usual with the app and then lock the vehicle with the vehicle key. Please drop the vehicle key in the key safe or give it to the SIXT Counter. If you return to a SIXT station, you will be charged additional fees, which can be found in our tariff overview.

How and where can I end my rent?

If you plan to drop off the vehicle at a SIXT station, we recommend you to inform yourself about the address of the desired station in advance. Can I end my journey abroad?

No, you won't be able to end your SIXT share journey abroad via the app. Please return the car to the pick-up country and drop it off in the business area or at any SIXT station. Please note, that additional fees will apply for any drop off in a different business area or at a SIXT station abroad.
